Jigsaw, the eighth instalment in the Saw franchise, has raced to the top of the US box office this weekend, making $16.25 million in its debut.

Picking up after the death of the series' killer, Jigsaw, the horror movie enjoyed Halloween success as the first Saw film since 2010.

Fellow new entry Suburbicon, George Clooney's latest directorial offering, did not fare so well at the box office. Making just $2.8 million in its opening weekend, it came in at number 9 in the box office, despite being written by Clooney himself alongside the Coen brothers, and starring big names such as Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac.

Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween slipped into second place at the box office this week, while sci-fi disaster film Geostorm, starring Gerard Butler, slipped into the third spot.

Happy Death Day, the surprising Halloween hit, is still in the top five in its third week of release, making $5,099,000 this weekend, while the Ryan Gosling Blade Runner reboot , Blade Runner 2049 dropped another place to number 5 after making $3.965 million.

The final new opening this weekend, Thank You for Your Service, made $3,702,000 in its debut. Following US servicemen dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the film stars Miles Teller, Haley Bennett and Amy Schumer.
