Sun Oct 15, 2017 4:12 pm

It made $26.5 million in its opening weekend

Happy Death Day has soared straight to the top of the US box office in its opening weekend, knocking Ryan Gosling's Blade Runner reboot Blade Runner 2049 into second place.

Comedy-horror Happy Death Day has enjoyed plenty of Halloween success in the run-up to fright night, making $26.5 million across its debut – not bad, considering it had a budget of just $4.5 million.

Blade Runner 2049 slipped to the second spot this week, making $15.1 million. Despite garnering critical success, the sequel to the 1982 cult hit has flopped at the box office, making a gross of just over $60.5 in its two weeks in cinemas, despite having a massive budget of more than $150 million.

In third place this week, The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan made $12.84 million, while the adaptation of Stephen King's It slipped further, earning $6.05 million and coming in at number four at the box office.

Rounding out the top five, Kate Winslet and Idris Elba's The Mountain Between Us made $5.65 million and slipped from second to fifth place.
