It took just $31 million in its debut weekend

The Blade Runner reboot, Blade Runner 2049, has had a disappointing debut weekend at the US box office – earning $31,525,000, just a fifth of its massive budget of more than $150 million.

The movie, which stars Blade Runner original Harrison Ford alongside Ryan Gosling, made just $13 million in cinemas across the US on Friday (October 6) when it opened.

Considering the Ridley Scott sequel got rave reviews the disappointing return at the box office comes as a bit of a surprise.

The comparative flop still put Blade Runner 2049 at the top of the US box office, ahead of fellow new release The Mountain Between Us, starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet, which earned $10.1 million this weekend – all according to BoxOfficeMojo.

The adaptation of Stephen King's It dropped to third place in its fifth week, making $9.655 million. The film became the highest grossing horror movie in US cinematic history after breaking box office records in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, children's new release My Little Pony: The Movie made $8.8 million, putting it at number four in the box office.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle, slipped down to fifth place this week, making $8.1 million.
