The Golden Circle has proved it's a golden ticket

Kingsman: The Golden Circle has shot to the top of the US box office on its first week of release.

Box Office Mojo reports that the spy sequel has pushed horror IT into second place, having made $39,000,000 over the weekend.

The Golden Circle follows Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and his fellow spies, the Kingsmen, as they team up with their American counterparts, the Statesmen, to try to save the world from evil Poppy (Julianne Moore).

The action-comedy also stars Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Mark Strong, Jeff Bridges, Poppy Delevingne and Elton John.

Although the film's clearly super popular with viewers, it has come under fire for its portrayal of a particular sex scene.

IT continues to pull its weight, earning $30,000,000 this weekend. The Stephen King adaptation, which stars Bill Skarsgard as creepy clown Pennywise, is now the highest-grossing US horror movie ever.

Another new entry, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, is at number three after grossing $21,245,000 over the weekend.

The animation, which follows a young ninja who struggles to accept the truth about his father, features the voices of Dave Franco, Justin Theroux, Olivia Munn and Jackie Chan.

Falling two places in the chart is American Assassin, which is at number four after making $6,250,000.

The film stars Dylan O'Brien and Michael Keaton and follows a young CIA black ops recruit who helps a Cold War veteran try to stop the launching of a nuclear weapon in the Middle East.

The top five is rounded out by Home Again, which falls one place after earning $3,311,821.

The comedy stars Reese Witherspoon as a single mum whose life is changed when she lets three young men move in with her.
