Prepare to be afraid, very afraid. (Or not, because it's not a horror.)

Guillermo del Toro has confirmed his upcoming film The Shape of Water is not a horror movie – but it's received an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America despite that...

"The Shape of Water got an 'R' rating from MPAA last week," del Toro wrote. "So- 'R' it is!"

He added: "No. The Shape of Water is NOT a horror movie. It's a bit of a fairy tale story - a fable set in early 1960's America."

The Shape of Water follows a woman and a merman who fall in love, set against the backdrop of 1963 Cold War era America.

Much like del Toro's previous films Crimson Peak, Cronos and Pan's Labyrinth, it looks like The Shape of Water will feature elements of horror, rather than going all-out terrifying.

Also, Del Toro's got a great track record for combining real life historical events with a fantasy element in The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth – not to mention skills with supernatural creatures.

Producer J Miles Dale previously said: "It feels like we have an embarrassment of riches on this film.

"An ensemble of incredible actors who are working at the very top of their craft, a wildly original story from Guillermo's one-of-a-kind mind, and the brilliant team at Fox Searchlight to shepherd us along.

"We're all very excited to see how far we can take it."
