With a cool $40 million in its opening weekend

Apologies to Xander Cage, who simply can't compete with the 23 multiple personalities of James McAvoy's character in M Knight Shymalan's Split, which dominated the US Box Office this week.

Collider reports that the thriller took a staggering $40 million, leaving Vin Diesel's xXx: Return of Xander Cage, trailing in its wake as the second highest grossing film of the week, taking an approximate $20 million.

In at third place is Hidden Figures, which tells the true story of three pioneering African American woman in the early days of the American Space programme.

The movie stars Taraji P Henson, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer in the lead roles, and has been going steady in the Box Office's top 5 for a couple of weeks now.

The number four spot goes to Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's award-sweeping musical, La La Land, which won 7 Golden Globes and has scored 11 BAFTA nominations, and in at five is the musical-barnyard animal comedy Sing, which stars Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey.
