Constance Wu hits out at The Great Wall for 'perpetuating racist myths'

Matt Damon is leading a HUGE battle against a mysterious monster in his new movie The Great Wall, and while it looks pretty epic, not everyone is happy with his involvement in the film.

Fresh Off the Boat star Constance Wu has hit out at Damon's casting in the movie with a scathing statement on Twitter, saying it typifies racist stereotyping in Hollywood.

Wu wrote: "We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that a only white man can save the world (sic).

"It's not based on actual fact. Our heroes don't look like Matt Damon. They look like Malala. Ghandi. Mandela. Your big sister when she stood up for you to those bullies that one time."

The actress also made the point that the practice of hiring white actors in Asian roles could be interpreted as Hollywood suggesting that white people are "superior".

"Remember it's not about blaming individuals," she added. "It's about pointing out the repeatedly implied racist notion that white people are superior to POC and that POC need salvation from our own color via white strength.

"We don't need salvation. We like our color and our culture and our own strengths and our own stories... we don't need you to save us from anything."

The Great Wall is directed by Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers) and set during the Northern Song Dynasty (959-1126) in China.

It tells the story of "an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world's most iconic structure".

This isn't the first time Wu has slammed Hollywood for 'whitewashing' Asian roles either, having previously hit out at the Ghost in the Shell remake starring Scarlett Johansson, after reports emerged that filmmakers were considering using CGI to make white actors look Asian.
