Captain America: Civil War tops the US box office

Marvel's latest movie took in $181.7 million


Captain America: Civil War easily dominated the US box office over its debut weekend.

The latest Marvel installment pulled in a whopping $181.7 million, after taking in $25 million on its first preview night on Thursday (May 5), making its global total as of Sunday (May 8) $678 million following its international release last weekend.

In second place was Jon Favreau's adaptation of The Jungle Book with $21.8 million; however, the film had its time in the top spot as it took in $103.6 million during its opening weekend last month and it was still the number one movie as of last weekend.

Meanwhile, audiences embraced the Mother's Day holiday this weekend, which helped the Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts movie of the same name climb up from fourth place to third with $9 million.

The Huntsman: Winter's War, on the other hand, is feeling the Marvel crush, sliding from second to fourth place with $3.5 million.

Keanu came in at number five with $3 million, followed by Barbershop: The Next Cut in sixth place with $2.7 million.

More than one month after its release, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still hanging on at the US box office. This week it dropped from ninth to tenth place with $1 million.

Zootopia, The Boss and Ratchet & Clank also round out the top ten.
