Film made total of $291m million worldwide

Disney's new The Jungle Book has clearly paid off big time, with the film making $103.6 million at the North American box office over its debut weekend.

This makes it the second-biggest April opening ever, ranking only below last year's Furious 7.

Worldwide, the live action adaptation made a total of $291 million - taking $187.4 in foreign earnings outside North America.

The Jungle Book is also Disney's second ever PG release to make a three-day opening over $100 million, just behind 2010's Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million).

The film hasn't done too badly with critics either, with Jon Favreau's adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's book earning rave reviews across the board.

A sequel is already in the works, with Kipling having written many more adventures involving protagonist Mowgli (Neel Sethi).

The Jungle Book sees Bill Murray voice lovable bear Baloo, Scarlett Johansson starring as Kaa the snake, and Idris Elba taking on the role of villainous tiger Shere Khan.

Disney's original animated version was released in 1967.
