Star Wars: The Force Awakens has started 2016 on top of the US box office, continuing its reign in the number one spot.The film, which is the seventh instalment in the sci-fi saga, took $88.3m over the weekend of January 1-3.
Daddy's Home had to settle for second place for the second consecutive week, taking $29m, while The Hateful Eight soared into third place with takings of $16.2m.
Sisters maintained its number 4 position with $12.5m while Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip rounded out the top 5 with $11.8m.
Joy is in at 6 after earning $10.4m and The Big Short drops a spot into number 7 with $9m.
Concussion is at number 8 after taking $8m, Point Break finishes the weekend at number 9 with $6.8m and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 completes the top ten with $4.6m in takings.
