The creator of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday (August 30) after battling brain cancer.

Craven was particularly known for his work on horror and slasher films having made his directorial debut in 1972 with The Last House on the Left.

Over the course of his decades-spanning career, Craven redefined the horror genre with his work on such films as Nightmare on Elm Street, Swamp Thing and the wildly popular Scream series, which later developed into a franchise consisting of several movies and a TV spinoff series for which Craven also served as an executive producer.

In addition to a highly-successful film career Craven was also a published author having released his novel Fountain Society in 1999.

More recently, the director had collaborated with 30 Days of Night co-creator Steve Niles on his first comic Coming of Rage that was released late last year and was working with producer Arnold Rifkin's Cheyenne Enterprises and Liquid Comics on adapting the comic into a television series.

Craven is survived by his wife, producer and frequent collaborator Iya Labunka.
