Ant-Man debuts on top at US box office

Ant-Man took the top spot at the US box office this weekend, beating last week's number one movie Minions.


The superhero movie, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily, brought in $58m on its first weekend with Minions closely behind with $50.2m.

The Despicable Me spin-off, starring Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm and Michael Keaton, easily debuted at number one last weekend with $115m. Its total earning is now at $216.69m.

Along with Ant-Man, there were also two other new releases - Amy Schumer's rom-com Trainwreck and Ian McKellen's Mr Holmes.

Trainwreck landed in third place with $30.2m, while Mr Holmes came in tenth place with $2.48m.

Based on the 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, Mr Holmes is the latest film about the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes.

Two of the summer's biggest movies Inside Out and Jurassic World still remain in the top five movies after their release a month ago.

Inside Out dropped from third to fourth place with $11.6m, adding to its box office total with $306.3m. Meanwhile, Jurassic World slipped from second place to fifth place with $11.4m, adding to its box office total with $611m.

Terminator: Genisys, Magic Mike XXL, The Gallows and Ted 2 also dropped from last weekend's ranking but remain in the top ten this week.

The US weekend box office top 10 for July 17-19 is as follows:

10. (-) Mr Holmes - $2,489,000
