Guardians of the Galaxy reclaims top spot at US box office

Guardians of the Galaxy has reclaimed the number one position at the US box office.



Marvel's space adventure was originally knocked off the top spot by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles two weeks ago, but returns to number one in its fourth week in theatres.

With weekend earnings of $17m, the James Gunn directed film's total gross now stands at just over $251m, while Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' $16m brings its total to $145m.

Chloë Grace Moretz's If I Stay debuts at number three, taking a little over $16m, while cop comedy Let's Be Cops falls down one place to fourth with $11m.

When the Game Stands Tall rounds off the top five in its debut week, followed by The Giver in sixth place with a weekend gross of $6.7m.

The Expendables 3 drops down three places in its second week, landing at number seven with weekend earnings of $6m.

The long-awaited Sin City: A Dame to Kill For debuts at eight with $6m, while Helen Mirren's The Hundred-Foot Journey falls into ninth place.

Into The Storm completes the top ten grossing films with weekend earnings of nearly $4m, bringing its total to $38m.

The US weekend box office top ten for August 24 is as follows:

4. (3) Let's Be Cops - $11,000,000

7. (4) The Expendables 3 - $6,600,000
8. (-) Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - $6,477,000
9. (7) The Hundred-Foot Journey - $5,562,000
10. (6) Into The Storm - $3,800,000
