Guardians of the Galaxy soars to number one at US box office

Guardians of the Galaxy has soared to the number one spot at the US box office.



The Marvel blockbuster has broken the record for the biggest August opening weekend with takings of $94m, beating the previous record of $69.3m set by The Bourne Ultimatum.

It is also the third biggest opening weekend of 2014, behind Transformers: Age of Extinction's $100m and Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95m.

Scarlett Johansson's Lucy is in second place with $18.3m, followed by new entry Get On Up in third with $14m.

Former number one Dawn of the Planet Apes completes this week's top five with ticket sales of $8.7m.

Disney sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue is down one place to six with $6.4m, ahead of horror film The Purge: Anarchy, which drops to seven with $5.6m.

Cameron Diaz comedy Sex Tape features at number eight, while And So It Goes and A Most Wanted Man round out the top ten in ninth and tenth respectively.

10. (10) A Most Wanted Man - $3,324,000
