Fault In Our Stars beats Edge of Tomorrow at US box-office

The Fault in our Stars has debuted at number one at the US box office after taking $48.2m.



Based on John Green's novel of the same name, the comedy-drama stars Shailene Woodley as a teenage cancer patient who falls in love with a fellow support group member (Ansel Elgort).

The huge opening makes the movie the best-ever debut for a contemporary drama, while it has already made back its $12m budget.

The Fault in our Stars also beat Tom Cruise's blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow, which came in third place with $29m.

Last week's number one movie Maleficent is at number two with $33.5m. The Angelina Jolie movie tells the story of the Sleeping Beauty villainess.

The top five is rounded out by X-Men: Days of Future Past with $14.7m and Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West with $7.18m.

Meanwhile, Godzilla slipped from fourth place to sixth with $5.9m. Its total earnings now stand at $185m.

Neighbors ($5.2m), Blended ($4.05m), Chef ($2.6m) and Million Dollar Arm ($1.8m) complete the top 10.

The US weekend box office top ten for June 8 is as follows:
