‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ reigns at US box office

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire dominated the US box office over the weekend.



The Jennifer Lawrence-starring Hunger Games sequel knocked Thor: The Dark World out of the top spot on the chart by earning $161.1m.

Catching Fire’s opening haul surpasses the previous record set by The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which earned $142.8 million in 2009.

Thor: The Dark World fell to second place with $14.1m, while The Best Man Holiday came in third with $12.5m.

The top five was rounded out by Vince Vaughn’s comedy Delivery Man with $8.2 million and Free Birds with $5.3m.

Dallas Buyers Club – which stars Matthew McConaughey as a drug smuggler – finished in 10th place by earning $2.8m.

Captain Phillips fell out of the top 10 over the weekend.

10. (-) Dallas Buyers Club – $2,770,000
