'Monsters University' wins US box office

Pixar's Monsters University has stormed the US weekend box office charts.

The animated film, featuring the voice talent of Billy Crystal, John Goodman and Helen Mirren, is a prequel to the highly popular 2001 movie about a pair of monsters who work as professional 'scarers'.

Pushing last week's number one movie Man of Steel off the top, Monsters University earned a whopping $82m in its debut weekend, the second-biggest opening of any Pixar film.

Brad Pitt's horror movie World War Z opened in second place with $66m, making it Pitt's biggest headlining movie debut.

Man of Steel falls to third place earning $41.2m, bringing its overall domestic gross to $210m.

Meanwhile, James Franco's This is the End slips from second to fourth place with $13m, while Jesse Eisenberg's Now You See Me falls two spots to number five with $7.87m.

The top ten is rounded out by The Purge, Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3.
