The former 60 Minutes anchor, who retired from his role on the show in September, died on Friday night in a New York City hospital.

His death was due to complications following minor surgery, CBS reports. He was admitted to hospital in October.

The journalist spent more than 60 years working at CBS, starting out in the profession during World War II. He earned six Writers Guild of America awards, one Peabody and four Emmys during his career.

"When I went on television it was as a writer," he said during his final appearance on 60 Minutes. "I don't think of myself as a television persona. I am a writer who reads what he has written."

He is survived by his four children: Ellen, former ABC News correspondent Brian, Greater Boston host Emily and Martha Fishel. Rooney also had five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
