The CW is expanding its footprint next season, adding original Sunday programming to its slate for the first time since the early days of the network

The network says it will run a two-hour primetime slate (8-10 p.m. ET/PT) on Sundays starting in fall 2018. The CW last aired original programming on the night in the 2008-09 season.

‘By expanding to six nights, The CW is now able to give our fans even more of the series they’re so passionate about,” CW chief Mark Pedowitz says in a statement. “Broadcasting remains the foundation of our multiplatform approach to bringing our programming to viewers. Over the past seven years, The CW has added more than 80 hours of original scripted programming to its schedule — now that number can continue to climb, as we grow our broadcast lineup and continue to add content on every platform.”

CW predecessor The WB had a Sunday lineup for most of its existence (UPN, which merged with The WB to form The CW, was weeknights only), and the new network tried to keep Sundays going for its first couple years of existence. It didn’t go well.

In 2008-09, The CW essentially rented out its Sunday to independent producer Media Rights Capital, whose shows “Valentine” and “Easy Money” both flopped. The network gave the night back to affiliates in spring 2009; most of them now run syndicated shows on the night.

The expansion likely means a continuation of the network’s tendency to renew the great majority of its series will continue. The CW also has been more active in development this season: It’s ordered nine pilots so far, up from its usual five or six.
