‘Megyn Kelly Today’ gets out of the gate slowly at NBC

Megyn Kelly’s hour of daytime TV hasn’t started out especially strong in the ratings

The former Fox News anchor’s NBC morning show, “Megyn Kelly Today,” hasn’t been a disaster in the Nielsens over its first few days, but it’s not a breakout hit either. On two of its first three days, it has come in behind the syndicated, Disney/ABC-distributed “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” which airs opposite Kelly’s show in much of the country.

In metered markets, “Megyn Kelly Today” (which airs at 9 a.m. ET) has averaged a 2.0 household rating and a 0.8 in the key morning-show demographic of women 25-54. Monday’s show (the only one so far for which final numbers are available) drew 2.93 million viewers, up from 2.61 million the previous week but down from the same day last year.

“Live” has averaged a 2.2 in households over the past three days and a 0.9 among women 25-54. It tied “Megyn Kelly Today” on Monday in the women 25-54 demographic, led by 0.1 Tuesday (0.9 vs. 0.8) and increased the margin Wednesday (1.0 vs. 0.7).

The numbers speak to a show still finding its feet, but they also follow a similar show to NBC’s Kelly-fronted primetime news show, “Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly,” that aired over the summer.

“Sunday Night” premiered to a decent-sized audience of 6.2 million people and a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 but declined afterward, averaging 3.69 million viewers and a 0.5 in the 18-49 demo for its full eight-episode run.

NBC has made a considerable investment in Kelly, so she’s not going anywhere. But the numbers for her hour of “Today” so far probably aren’t causing champagne corks to pop at 30 Rock.
