US cable channel History has axed Top Gear USA - an American adaptation of the motoring show - after six seasons on the air.

History announced Tuesday (June 28): "We'd like to thank the entire Top Gear team for five great seasons on History, however we have decided not to order additional seasons for the network."

BBC Worldwide Productions quickly spoke out to clarify that it remains committed to finding Top Gear US a new broadcast home.

"We are fully committed to the hugely successful Top Gear brand - known all over the world - and have begun exploring new opportunities for the series in the US," BBC Worldwide Productions says.

Presenter Rutledge Wood initially revealed the demise of Top Gear USA in a series of social media posts hours earlier.

"We cannot say enough how much we truly appreciate each and every one of you," Rutledge wrote to fans on Facebook. "You have always been there for us in great numbers, and we really do love you all.

"You are the reason shows like ours exist, and you're also the reason we've been so lucky to do this show for so long together. We never dreamed how many families would sit and watch our show and laugh together.

"We never knew how many couples would sit and watch three goofballs go out and try to make each other laugh. And yet, you all watched...and you told other people and shared in the joy.

"To everyone who worked on TGUS- thank you. For everything. You're our family and you're the reason we got to do this for so many years together."

Rutledge also tipped that he was keen to re-team with Top Gear USA co-hosts Adam Ferrara and Tanner Foust going forward.

Top Gear USA adapted several of the UK original's most popular segments - turning 'Star in a Reasonably-Priced Star' into 'Big Star, Small Car' - and even had its own version of The Stig.

Back in the UK, the revamped Top Gear starring Matt LeBlanc and Chris Evans is battling declining ratings and harsh critical reviews.

Earlier this week, the BBC declined to comment on reports that LeBlanc will quit Top Gear if Evans stays for a second season.

Evans and LeBlanc have dodged rumours of a feud ever since they signed on to replace Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May as Top Gear's new faces.
