Wednesday ratings: The return of Empire draws 16 million

Empire drew a whopping 16 million viewers for Fox with its season premiere on Wednesday (September 23), according to Nielsen figures.

Fox's night started off with Rosewood scoring a healthy 2.4 (7.54m) at 8pm in its debut, before Empire delivered a massive 6.7 (16.18m) at 9pm.

Fox easily won the key 18-49 demographic on Wednesday with 4.4.

The return of Survivor earned 2.5 (9.70m) at 8pm on CBS, down from last fall's 2.7. Big Brother's finale rose four-tenths from last week to 2.2 (6.54m) at 9.30pm.

ABC's The Middle notched 2.1 (8.21m) at 8pm, The Goldbergs held steady with last year's premiere score of 2.4 (7.62m) at 8.30pm, Modern Family's opener fell six-tenths of a point from last season to 3.2 (9.46m) at 9pm, and black-ish averaged 2.4 (7.30m) at 9.30pm.

At 10pm on ABC, Nashville's season premiere dipped to 1.2 (4.91m).

NBC's The Mysteries of Laura was down eight-tenths year-on-year, garnering 1.2 (7.11m) at 8pm. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit took 1.8 (8.27m) at 10pm.

America's Next Top Model received 0.4 (1.35m) at 8pm on The CW, followed by A Wicked Offer interesting 0.2 (0.50m) at 9pm.
