A pilot based on the 1996 Coen brothers' movie was first announced back in September.

Cable network FX announced a full Fargo miniseries at its annual upfront presentation this morning (March 28) in New York.

Both Joel and Ethan Coen served as executive producers on the television pilot, written by Bones producer and story editor Noah Hawley.

Fargo was the Coen brothers' sixth directorial effort and starred Frances McDormand, William H Macy and Steve Buscemi. The film won two Oscars, including an award for McDormand in the category of 'Best Actress' and a second for the Coens' original screenplay.

The movie was previously adapted into a television pilot in 2003, without the brothers' participation. Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie) starred, with Kathy Bates directing.
