The modern-day retelling of the classic detective was announced last month, and will take place in New York.

The former Trainspotting and Eli Stone actor is the first confirmed casting for the project, reports Deadline.

Robert Doherty has written the pilot's script, and will also executive produce alongside Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly, with Michael Cuesta directing.

Miller recently appeared on stage in Danny Boyle's Frankenstein opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective in the BBC's present-day, London-based Sherlock.

Sherlock executive Sue Vertue recently stated that she was "extremely worried" about the prospect of an American adaptation.

If picked up to a full series, Elementary will most likely arrive as part of the CBS 2012 fall schedule.
