NBC has officially renewed the long-running crime procedural for its twenty-first season, which will make “Law & Order: SVU” the longest-running live-action primetime series in history. Mariska Hargitay is set to return for the new season, where she will reprise her role as Lt. Olivia Benson, and will similarly make history as the longest-running character in a live-action primetime series

“We tip our cap to [creator/executive producer] Dick Wolf, Mariska Hargitay and the amazing cast and crew of SVU, who now all go into the record book,” said Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, Co-Chairmen of NBC Entertainment. “This incredible run is an example of what happens when producers, writers and actors all come together and create a show that, year after year, speaks to its audience in a powerful way. We couldn’t be more proud of this remarkable achievement.”

“I’m deeply proud to be a part of this groundbreaking show, and humbled to make television history today,” added Hargitay. “The longevity and continued success of SVU is a testament not only to the show’s powerful storytelling and ability to connect with viewers, but to its necessity. We have told important stories for 20 years, and we will continue to tell them.”

Throughout its run, “Law & Order: SVU” has remained a strong and consistent ratings performer for the network. This season, the series is currently averaging a 0.9 live + same day rating among adults 18-49, with 4.3 million viewers.

New episodes of “Law & Order: SVU” air Thursdays nights on NBC. The series now joins “New Amsterdam,” “Will & Grace,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Good Place,” “The Blacklist,” “Superstore,” “Chicago P.D,” “Chicago Med,” and “Chicago Fire” on a growing list of NBC shows renewed for the 2019-20 season.
