BBC America announced Monday that creator Neil Cross and star Idris Elba will reunite for a fifth season of “Luther.” The four-part Season 5 will begin filming in early 2018; a premiere date hasn’t been determined yet.

“What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know. So much unfinished business,” Cross says in a statement.

“The thing is, we’ve been asking ourselves the same question. Because we love John and wonder what he’s up to. And as for me, I’m scared of the monsters. The face at the window. The hand under the bed. The shadow at the end of the street. Who’s going to stop them, if not John Luther?

“In the end, we picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they’d like to find out what happens next. It turns out, they would. So that’s what we’re going to do.”

The next “Luther” will arrive on American TVs close to three years after the two-part fourth season aired in December 2015. The show stretches back to 2010 but has produced only 16 episodes — six for the first season, four each in Seasons 2 and 3 and two for the most recent run. Such is the life of a BBC drama.

“Luther” joins this list of shows that have been renewed for the 2017-18 season and beyond.
