Announced late Tuesday afternoon, FOX has canceled “24: Legacy” after just one season. Hailing from creators Robert Cochran, Manny Coto, Evan Katz, and Joel Surnow, the series followed a military hero who returns to the U.S. with trouble following him back. With nowhere else to turn, the man asks CTU to help him, while also stopping one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil. It starred Hawkins, Miranda Otto, Anna Diop and more.

After premiering in the prime post-Super Bowl on FOX — where it raked in 17.6 million viewers and a 6.1 rating among adults 18-49 at the time — the series continually lost viewers throughout its first season, ending with an average 6.3 million total viewers and a 1.7 rating. As a result, the series had remained on the fringe of the network’s 2017-18 schedule, though, that doesn’t make the series’ cancellation any less surprising.

But fear not “24” fans, as it looks like the cancellation of “Legacy” may just be the beginning of a new era for the property on Fox. Reports state that the network is currently in talks with “24” producers, about possibly bringing the franchise back as an anthology series.

Similar to HBO’s “True Detective” or FX’s “Fargo” and “American Horror Story,” the series would implement the same real-time device that has made the “24” brand iconic, but with each season focusing on a different central conflict and entirely new set of characters.

Whether or not Fox ends up moving forwards with those plans will have to wait to be seen, but it remains a legitimate possibility, based solely on the brand name recognition that “24” has acquired over the years. If “24” does return, however, it doesn’t look like it’ll be with any connections or references to “Legacy.”
