‘Eyewitness’ canceled at USA after one season

USA has officially put an end to its freshman series “Eyewitness,” following the show’s first season finale back in late December.



Premiering back in mid-October, “Eyewitness” was based on the Norwegian crime thriller, “Oyevitne,” and came from creator, executive producer and showrunner Adi Hasak (“Shades of Blue”). Compared to past crime dramas like “The Killing,” the series centered on two gay, closeted boys having a secret relationship in a small town, who unknowingly witness a triple murder. Afraid of being ousted in their town or being tracked down by the killer, though, the boys decide to keep their information a secret, but soon learn that what they’ve seen cannot be forgotten, and can have devastating effects on their lives.

“Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke served as an exec producer on the series as well, and directed the first two episodes of the 10-episode first season.

The series starred Julianne Nicholson, Gil Bellows, and James Paxton, and was met with mostly lukewarm reviews from critics and casual viewers throughout a majority of its first season. Placed on Sunday nights after the always-reliable “Law & Order: SVU” encore episodes on the network, “Eyewitness” failed to garner much of a dedicated following or strong ratings, which led to its cancellation today. The fate of fellow USA freshman drama, “Falling Water,” is still unknown for the time being.

This is a rare one-and-done series for USA, which has been steadily expanding its original programming lineup for several years now. Other notable series veterans on the network include “Mr. Robot,” “Colony,” “Queen of South,” Shooter,” and more.
