FOX has made the no-brainer decision to renew “Lethal Weapon” for a second season. The network made the announcement Wednesday.

The show has performed solidly in the ratings all season, both when it was paired with “Empire” on Wednesday nights and when it has aired away from FOX’s biggest show. It’s averaging a 1.6 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.63 million viewers the night it airs, making it the network’s No. 2 drama this season (excluding the post-Super Bowl premiere of “24: Legacy” from that show’s average).

With a week of DVR and on-demand viewing, “Lethal Weapon” rises to 2.5 in adults 18-49 and 9.38 million viewers. Its multi-platform audience is 11 million, FOX says.

“‘Lethal Weapon’ continues to fire on all cylinders,” FOX Entertainment president David Madden says in a statement. “Every week, it delivers a big, fun rollercoaster ride, but also remains touchingly human and genuinely emotional, and that’s due to the chemistry that’s developed not only between [leads] Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford, but the entire cast.”

The pickup for “Lethal Weapon” comes a day after FOX renewed “The Mick” for a second season. The network also has locked in “Empire,” “The Simpsons,” “Bob’s Burgers” and “Lucifer” for 2017-18.

“Lethal Weapon,” based on the movie franchise, stars Crawford and Wayans as LAPD detectives Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh. The cast also includes Kevin Rahm, Keesha Sharp, Jordana Brewster, Johnathan Fernandez, Dante Brown and Chandler Kinney. Matt Miller (“The 100,” “Chuck”) is the showrunner.

“Lethal Weapon” joins this list of shows that have been renewed for the 2017-18 season and beyond.
