The network cuts the cord after weeks of bad press

After all that drama about Stana Katic being dropped from a potential Castle season nine, ABC just cancelled the show anyway.

The network cut the cord on the crime comedy-drama on Thursday (May 12) following weeks of bad publicity over cast exits, according to multiple media outlets.

A shortened final season was reportedly considered by ABC before it finally chose to drop Castle entirely.

ABC's sure-to-be controversial decision comes even after signing stars Nathan Fillion, Seamus Dever, Javier Esposito, Molly Quinn and Toks Olagundoye to new contracts.

However, leading lady Stana Katic was publicly dropped by ABC while negotiations for a potential ninth season were still underway last month.

Castle's writers have also penned two different endings for next week's finale 'Crossfire' - purportedly shot in case the show was indeed axed.

'Crossfire' airs May 16 on ABC in the US. The show airs on Alibi in the UK.
