The show's creator Terence Winter confirmed on Thursday (January 9) that he and HBO recently reached a decision to bring the show to its close.

"After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion," Winter commented in a statement.

HBO president Michael Lombardo also said: "It has been an incredible honour to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages."

Boardwalk Empire has won two Golden Globes and multiple Primetime Emmy Awards since its premiere in 2010.

The show was a collaboration between writer Winter, producer-director Martin Scorsese and Mark Wahlberg.

Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald and Michael Shannon have led the cast of the drama series, which is set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City.

Boardwalk Empire will return for its fifth and final season this autumn. Sky Atlantic airs the show in the UK.
