Announced today, USA has officially renewed the veteran crime drama for a fifth season, the news of which comes just as the series is preparing to wrap up its fourth season later tonight.

Created by M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller, “Queen of the South” follows the story of Teresa Mendoza, a woman forced to seek refuge in America after her drug-dealing boyfriend is killed in Mexico. At the same time, Teresa is teaming up with an unlikely figure from her past, who can help her bring down the drug lord who forced her to go on the run in the first place.

The show’s evolving cast includes Alice Braga, Hemky Madera, Veronica Falcón, Peter Gadiot, Nick Sagar, Joaquim de Almeida, and more. Showrunners Dailyn Rodriguez and Ben Lobato are set to reprise their roles for the fifth season.

One of USA’s strongest and most consistent ratings performers, “Queen of the South” has maintained its reliability throughout its fourth season. Averaging a 0.3 live + same day rating among adults 18-49 and 911,000 viewers this year, the series has ticked down just a bit from its third season’s 0.4 and 1.13 million viewer averages.

So after suffering from only small year-to-year declines in the ratings, “Queen of the South” is still a strong enough performer to earn its continued existence on USA.
