Last week, MTV scored 8.45 million viewers for the premiere of the show's third season - however, this week's episode has exceeded it by reaching 8.6 million.

The series has now set an all-time record for the network, putting Jersey Shore in a strong position to lead its timeslot for the remainder of the season.

Associated Content reports that the latest episode also scored 4.4 in the all-important 18-49 demographic.

The only show in the 10pm timeslot that managed to beat Jersey Shore was CBS procedural drama The Mentalist, which scored 10.28 million viewers.

MTV have already confirmed that series cast member Pauly D will receive his own spinoff series to capitalise on the show's popularity.

Jersey Shore continues on January 17.
