Fox has announced plans to move American Idol to Wednesday and Thursday nights as part of its midseason lineup.



The decision has been made to move the long-running reality show out of its usual Tuesday night slot and into Thursdays to increase advertising revenue.

"Here's a chance for us to own Thursday nights," Fox's Mike Darnell told The Hollywood Reporter. "You have to do a big move to take on Thursdays and this is a big move."

As part of the changing lineup, J.J. Abrams's science fiction drama Fringe will move from Thursday to Friday nights.

American Idol will move to Wednesday and Thursday nights beginning January 19, 2011.
