The instalment, called 'Britney/Brittany', featured Britney Spears songs and some short cameos from the popstar.

However, the PTC has now described the episode as the worst show of the week.

In a post on its website, the council criticised the "pandering tribute to toxic teen role model Britney Spears" and added that it was worse than some other television shows because more children are likely to watch.

The group, which criticised the "skimpy outfits" in some of the performances, added that the episode amounted to an "endorsement of narcotics abuse, public masturbation, and school-sanctioned burlesque".

The PTC also slammed the focus on Spears, saying: "Perhaps most troubling is the deification of a troubled popstar into a symbol of empowerment and self-esteem. Considering her stints in rehab, her very public breakdowns and her questionable parenting skills, there is absolutely no way Spears should be considered a role model. The producers of the show can spare us the old song-and-dance about fallen celebs turning their lives around."

The 'Britney/Brittany' episode picked up the highest ever ratings for Glee as around 13.3m viewers tuned in to watch. Songs from the instalment have also entered the Billboard Charts, causing the Glee cast to surpass the Beatles' chart record.
