NBC’s commitment to discovering new, unrecorded hit songs will continue for another season

The network has officially renewed the freshman summer unscripted series, “Songland,” for a second season today. The renewal comes just one day ahead of the show’s season one finale, which is set to air after another new episode of “America’s Got Talent” tomorrow night.

“Songland” has had a pretty good run in the ratings this summer, averaging a solid 0.8 live + same day rating in the adults 18-49 demo and 4.05 million viewers, even despite moving from Tuesday to Wednesday nights halfway through its season. The show has been averaging a 1.1 rating and 5.1 million viewers in the live +7 ratings as well, making it the most-watched rookie unscripted series of the summer.

The reality-competition series offers a wide range of songwriters the chance to have their songs recorded and released by popular artists working in the music industry. Musicians that have participated in the show’s first season have included The Jonas Brothers, John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Meghan Trainor, Macklemore, OneRepublic, Leona Lewis, Aloe Blacc, Old Dominion, Charlie Puth, and will.i.am.

Six songs that have come out of “Songland’s” first season have gone on to hit the no. 1 spot in iTunes music charts, including The Jonas Brothers’ “Greenlight,” Kelsea Ballerini’s “Better Luck Next Time,” Black Eyed Peas’ “Be Nice,” “Shadow” by Macklemore ft. IRO, “Solo Quiero (Somebody to Love)” by Leona Lewis, Cali y El Dandee and Juan Magán, and John Legend’s “We Need Love.”
