Announced today, the network has officially renewed its American take on the hit British unscripted series for a second season. The news comes despite the show, which has been airing one new episode every weeknight on the network since July 9, putting up only an OK performance in the linear ratings up to this point.

“The passion of ‘Love Island’s’ audience is incredible,” said CBS Entertainment President, Kelly Kahl. “The intensity of their social media engagement has created tremendous enthusiasm for the series here at the network. We love the show’s creative execution and can’t wait for next season.”

“After its first season, the U.K. version exploded via word of mouth and social media to become a huge hit, and its viewership has grown every year,” added Thom Sherman, Senior Executive VP of Programming at CBS. “We believe first-season U.S. fans are just as passionate and engaged, and we look forward to building on that foundation with another fun season next summer.”

Throughout its first season, “Love Island” has averaged a 0.5 live + same day rating among adults 18-49 and 2.21 million viewers. So, even though there is the potential for “Love Island” to experience a ratings improvement in its second season, it’ll have to be a considerable rise for the show to be considered the kind of solid unscripted performer that CBS wants it to be.
