Announced today, ABC has officially renewed the singing-competition series for a third season, the news of which comes just a week before “Idol” is set to wrap up its second season. There is still no word on whether or not the show’s current judges – Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan – will be returning for the new season.

With this renewal, “Idol” is now set to return for its third season on ABC, and eighteenth overall.

Some may be surprised by the show’s renewal today, as the series has taken a bit of a ratings hit in its second season. In the live + same day ratings, “Idol” has been averaging a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 this year, down from its previous season’s 1.6 average.

However, “Idol” is still ABC’s second-highest-rated unscripted series of the season so far, behind only “The Bachelor,” and is one of the network’s highest-rated overall shows. So depending on how much of a ratings decline “Idol” experiences in its third season, its future on ABC may be uncertain, but for now it looks like “American Idol” has done enough to get it at least one more year on the network.

It will be joined on the network’s 2019-20 lineup by several other returning unscripted series, including the recently-renewed “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Bachelor.”
