Fox confirmed today that the talent show - which discovered stars such as Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, Katharine McPhee, Adam Lambert and Carrie Underwood - will be back in January for its final season.

The network also promised that judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr will come back for the final episodes, along with host Ryan Seacrest.

The final season of American Idol is being called a "celebratory event" which will "pay tribute to the past 14 seasons of amazingly talented contestants and the millions of fans who tweeted, texted and championed their Idols".

Earlier seasons of American Idol could pick up ratings of over 30m viewers, but the latest season has only managed to grab audiences of between 7m and 11m people.

The current season will end this week, with Nick Fradiani, Clark Beckham and Jax battling it out on Tuesday (May 12) and Wednesday (May 13).
