The Hobbit holds off Anchorman 2 at UK box office

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has topped the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

Peter Jackson’s sequel earned £5.3 million, down 43% in ticket sales from its opening haul, to see off competition from Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues at the top of the chart.

Anchorman 2 is one of five new entries in the top ten, with Walking with Dinosaurs and Bollywood release Dhoom 3 landing at numbers four and five respectively.

Elsewhere, The Harry Hill Movie landed at number seven just ahead of kids’ animation Moshi Monsters: The Movie.

Outside of the top ten, American Hustle earned £39,595 after opening at a single London location to chart at number 15. The David O Russell crime drama will expand nationwide on January 1.
