‘Kick-Ass 2’ beats ‘Planes’ at UK box office

Kick-Ass 2 has topped the UK box office on its first week on release.

The superhero sequel, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz, pulled in £2.4 million in ticket sales (including previews from Wednesday and Thursday), to hold off competition from DisneyToon’s Planes and action-comedy 2 Guns.

Last week’s number three film Grown Ups 2 slips a place to four, with James Wan-directed horror The Conjuring rounding out the top five.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, last week’s number one film, slides down six places to number seven.

The Steve Coogan-led film saw a 61% drop in box office takings, but the homegrown comedy has still managed to earn an impressive £4.2 million in its two weeks on release.

Next week will likely see a significant overhaul in the chart with high-profile new releases Elysium, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and We’re the Millers all opening in cinemas.
