‘Oblivion’ tops UK box office chart

Tom Cruise’s Oblivion has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The science fiction blockbuster, directed by Tron: Legacy‘s Joseph Kosinski, debuted to £4.9 million to see off competition from last week’s chart-topper The Croods.

Oblivion‘s total is up from the £3.5 million earned by Cruise’s last outing Jack Reacher, but falls short of the £8 million total of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

New releases Scary Movie 5 and The Place Beyond the Pines chart at numbers three and four respectively, while GI Joe: Retaliation dips three places to complete the top five.

Elsewhere, the most dramatic faller is horror Dark Skies. The Keri Russell-led film tumbles down six places to number nine after a sharp 70% drop in ticket sales.
