Teenager who stabbed a father to death in Coventry jailed for six years

A teenager who stabbed a father to death in a garden following a row over drugs has been sentenced to six years in prison.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stabbed Robert Burgess in the chest and left him for dead.

Mr Burgess' three-year-old daughter was left alone in the house as her dad laid dying outside.

And it wasn't until later that evening - Thursday, October 3, 2018 - that a family member made the harrowing discovery of his body after no-one had heard from Mr Burgess for several hours.

It is understood an argument over drugs broke out on the driveway of a home in Armfield Street, Bell Green, earlier in the day before the row continued in the garden.

It was then that the teenager produced the knife and fatally stabbed lifelong Sky Blues fan Mr Burgess, before callously running from the scene.

A murder investigation was immediately launched and the killer was quickly identified after Mr Burgess’ family posted footage on social media. He was arrested three days later on suspicion of murder and subsequently charged.

He appeared at Warwick Crown Court in March where he instead pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of manslaughter.

And today (May 1) he was jailed for six years and four months at the same court.

Unmasked: Identity of teenager killer who stabbed a father to death in Coventry

Image

This is the face of teenage killer Lewis Billings.

Until now we had been unable to tell you his name or show you his face despite him being jailed for stabbing a father to death in Coventry.

He plunged a knife in to the chest of Robert Burgess after a row broke out outside the home of the victim's grandad in Bell Green and Mr Burgess was left to die in the garden.

His horrific death in October 2019 was made even worse as Robert's three-year-old daughter was alone in the house for a number of hours until a family member, concerned that they hadn't heard from Robert, visited the house in Armfield Street and made the harrowing discovery of his body.

Police revealed that a 17-year-old had been arrested over the stabbing and was eventually charged with murder. This was Billings.

However, due to his age CoventryLive was unable to publish any details that could lead to him being identified, even when he appeared in court in March 2020 to plead guilty to an alternative charge of manslaughter.

His manslaughter plea was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) - much to the annoyance of Robert's loved ones - and Billings was jailed for six years and four months in early May, just days before he turned 18.

Court orders restricting the identity of young defendants usually expire when they turn 18, however it has only been recently confirmed by a judge at Warwick Crown Court that Billings can now be identified.

West Midlands Police have also released his custody image upon request from CoventryLive.
