Police say they are not ruling out a possible link between a fatal house fire and an arson attack in Coventry.

A man died after a blaze broke out at a flat in Jenner Street, Foleshill, at around 4.30am on Tuesday morning (August 20). The cause of fire is not yet known and formal identification of the victim is still to take place.

Less than 30 minutes later, fire crews were dealing with a mattress having been set on fire outside a house in Foleshill Road, near to the junction with Eagle Street.

The fire also damaged the front of the property, although no-one was hurt.

Fire that killed man 'suspected arson attack'

Image

Police have confirmed they are treating a fatal house fire in Coventry on Tuesday as arson.

Malcolm Turner, 69, was confirmed dead at the scene on Jenner Street, Foleshill, after the fire broke out at about 04:25.

West Midlands Police said the blaze started when a mobility scooter caught fire outside the apartment block and are investigating the possibility it was deliberately set alight.

Detectives are also investigating the possibility the fire is linked to a second, nearby on Foleshill Road, which broke out 20 minutes later. Nobody was injured in the second fire, which is also being treated as arson.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on Thursday to establish how Mr Turner died.

Two arrested over fatal flat fire that killed pensioner

Image

Two men have been arrested after a pensioner died in a flat fire in Foleshill.

Malcolm Turner was found dead in a flat on Jenner Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Fire crews were called to the property at 4.25am after reports the maisonette had gone up in flames.

It’s believed the blaze was started deliberately when Mr Turner’s mobility scooter was set alight outside the apartment block.

That blaze was linked to another fire where a dumped mattress was torched 20 minutes later, with flames spreading to nearby properties.

And now police have revealed they are probing a series of smaller fires in the area over recent weeks to see if they are too connected.

Malcolm, 69, was found collapsed inside the property but was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem examination has revealed he died from smoke inhalation.

Two men have now been arrested following his death.

A 43-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder and a 45-year-old was detained for criminal damage overnight.

They both remain in custody today (23 August).

West Midlands Police Detective Chief Inspector Jim Munro is leading the investigation and has appealed for any motorists who were driving in the Foleshill Road and surrounding area on Monday night into Tuesday morning to get in touch.

Man accused of murder over flat fire appears in court

A man charged with murdering a pensioner in a Coventry flat fire has appeared in court.

Richard Newing is accused of killing 69-year-old Malcolm Turner after a mobility scooter was set alight outside a property in Jenner Street, Foleshill, with the flames then spreading to the flat itself.

Newing, 43, was arrested a few days after the fatal fire and charged with murder and arson with intent to endanger life at another blaze on Foleshill Road on the same morning.

He appeared at Warwick Crown Court on Tuesday (August 27) and no pleas were entered.

Newing, of Iden Road, Hillfields, was remanded in custody ahead of a further hearing on September 23.

Richard Newing guilty of manslaughter after fatal flat fire in Coventry

Image

A killer who was "obsessed with fire" simply walked away leaving his victim to die after starting a fire at a Coventry flat.

Richard Newing set fire to a mobility scooter outside the home of Malcom Turner in Foleshill, which trapped the pensioner inside, unable to escape.

Not knowing whether or not he had killed anyone, Newing walked to nearby Foleshill Road and started a second fire, which again spread to a home.

Fortunately the occupants managed to flee the property, although Mr Turner was sadly not so lucky.

The 69-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the first fire in Jenner Street in the early hours of August 20 last year.

Police immediately began their hunt for the culprit and a massive CCTV trawl eventually led to them placing Newing, 43, at the scene and he was arrested two days later.

He today (February 25) appeared at Warwick Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.

Newing had previously denied more serious charges of murder and arson with intent to endanger life, but the Crown Prosecution Service today accepted his pleas to the lesser charges.

He will be sentenced in April.

Killer arsonist 'obsessed with fire' jailed for 13 years for pensioner's death

A killer who was "obsessed with fire" has been jailed for more than 13 years for causing the death of a pensioner in a Coventry flat fire.

Richard Newing set a mobility scooter alight outside the home of Malcolm Turner in Foleshill, which trapped the pensioner inside, unable to escape.

Not knowing whether or not he had killed anyone, Newing walked to nearby Foleshill Road and started a second fire, which again spread to a home.

Fortunately the occupants managed to flee the property, although Mr Turner was sadly not so lucky.

The 69-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the first fire in Jenner Street in the early hours of August 20, 2019.

Police immediately began their hunt for the culprit and a massive CCTV trawl eventually led to them placing Newing at the scene and he was arrested two days later.

In February 2020 he appeared at Warwick Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.

Newing had previously denied more serious charges of murder and arson with intent to endanger life, and the Crown Prosecution Service accepted his pleas to the lesser charges.

His sentencing has been delayed numerous times and finally took place today (March 5) and Newing was given what is known as an extended prison sentence which includes a jail term of 13-and-a-half years.

Because it is part of an extended sentence, he will have to serve at least two-thirds of that period, and will then only be released when the Parole Board considers it safe to do so.

Once he is released, he will be on licence for the rest of the prison term and for a further five years.

Simple, it's less work for everyone and they can all get back to the golf course and enjoy themselves. :fuming:
