EFL silence over Coventry City deadline

The English Football League will not reveal the deadline they have set Coventry City to tell them where they will be playing next season.

Despite fixtures being due to be released on June 20, Sky Blues' chief executive David Boddy yesterday admitted that a fixture questionnaire filled out by other teams in March had not yet been completed by Coventry City.

He added: "There is a deadline, although I am not at liberty to say what that deadline is but it will be sorted one way or another.”

CoventryLive put the following questions to the EFL:

  • With the announcement that the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on May 29th was cancelled, has the EFL got a new deadline for CCFC to submit their plans to you?

  • Will you comment on what CCFC have told you that meant the EGM could be cancelled? Did they confirm details to you of where they will play next season privately, or have they still got to do this?
A spokesman for the EFL did not answer those questions.

Instead they said there would be no update until after a EFL board meeting tomorrow (Wednesday, May 5) afternoon in which the Sky Blues' situation will be discussed.

Coventry City to groundshare with Birmingham City for 2019-20 season

Image

Coventry City will groundshare at Birmingham City's St Andrew's for the 2019-20 season after failing to agree a deal to stay at the Ricoh Arena.

They had hoped to remain in Coventry but said the deadline for an agreement with Ricoh landlords Wasps has passed.

A club statement said a groundshare was necessary for Coventry to retain their place in the English Football League.

The EFL said the league had "reluctantly agreed" to the groundshare despite being placed in an "unenviable position" after previously suggesting Coventry needed to find a solution in their hometown.

"This is a decision that has not been taken lightly and it is regrettable that the parties involved have been unable to find a suitable and sensible solution," said the EFL statement.

"The EFL board calls on all parties to resolve this matter at the earliest convenience for the benefit of the city of Coventry, the club and people living in the local community.

"The EFL remains firmly of the view that its member clubs should play in the towns and cities from which they take their name.

"A number of conditions have been placed on the club to ensure progress is made in regard to finding a solution to getting the club back playing in Coventry at the earliest opportunity including the payment of a £1m bond and a quarterly review in order for the board to be updated on developments ahead of season 2020-21."

Bit ripe! There is only one party at fault here and that is the party that tried to buy things up on the cheap! :fuming:
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

EFL clarify Coventry City's groundshare position at St Andrew's

The English Football League have clarified their stance on Coventry City’s ‘temporary’ groundshare away from their home city.

The Sky Blues secured a move to Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s stadium this summer after failing to agree terms with Premiership rugby club Wasps for a fresh deal to stay at the Ricoh Arena.

Fans were told at the time that the EFL had granted permission for the football club to move 22 miles away to play their ‘home’ games in League One, believing that to be for one season only.

However, following the inaugural meeting of the recently formed Coventry City Supporters’ Forum – made up of all of the established supporters clubs and groups to represent the widest possible range of fans – it emerged that the club have the option to stay away from the city for up to three years.

The minutes of the meeting revealed that the club owner Sisu have re-engaged a land agent to identify possible sites to build a new stadium, revealing that, to-date, several possible sites have been identified.

But the minutes also revealed the bombshell: “The EFL have currently given CCFC the ability to play outside of Coventry for up to three seasons if necessary, but the EFL will allow CCFC to return to Coventry at any point.”

Asked for clarification of the situation as the EFL see it, a spokesman told CoventryLive: “As confirmed previously, the EFL Board has given Coventry City permission to play its home fixtures at the Trillion Trophy Stadium in season 2019/20.

“There is the potential for this arrangement to be extended for up to a further two seasons subject to the EFL Board being satisfied that the Club are making suitable progress towards finding a long term solution that will see it return to the city of Coventry.

“Discussions remain ongoing in this respect.”
