Shipley’s strike not enough in Ricoh draw

Coventry City completed their home fixture list with a performance and a result that summed up their Ricoh record this season.

Although the Sky Blues were technically still in the play-off race and Shrewsbury were theoretically still in relegation danger, the goal-difference situation at both ends of the table meant that this was really a nothing game.

And as the home fans waited for their team’s lap of honour it was the noisy knot of 1,200 visitors who celebrated the final whistle with a joyful chant of ‘we are staying up’ – substitute Fejiri Okenabirhie’s equaliser giving them four points from their head-to-head matches and underlining City’s underwhelming return against relegation candidates this term.

Alex Gilliead sounded an early warning to the Sky Blues when he fired a 25-yarder just over the bar.

But it was the home side who produced most of the football on offer in an untidy first half and they claimed their 16th-minute lead courtesy of a flash of genuine quality as Jordan Shipley just kept the ball in play on the left touchline to launch a surging run from half-way.

A slick exchange with Brandon Mason put him clear in the box and although his initial effort was parried by Jonathan Mitchell the midfielder pounced on the rebound to stab a left-foot shot into the corner of the net.

Shipley then tried his luck from distance, a fierce first-timer which looked goalbound until it was charged down just inside the area.

But although City’s front runners continued to press they couldn’t fashion another clear opening and it was Lee Burge who was twice called into action to foil Tyrese Campbell – first a sharp block at his near post and then a last-ditch tackle as Tom Davies’s undercooked back-pass sold him short.

Ro-Shaun Williams caused Mitchell similar problems early in the second half but the Shrews keeper got out of jail as his desperate kick was blocked by Jordy Hiwula but ricocheted wide of the empty goal.

Robins refreshed his attack by replacing Amadou Bakayoko with Conor Chaplin in the 64th minute, Sam Ricketts taking the opportunity to send on former City favourite Romain Vincelot.

It was the visitors who almost seized the initiative, Scott Golbourne volleying just wide of the far posts as City failed to deal with one free-kick and skipper Luke Waterfall heading narrowly wide when he was picked out from another.

And Shrewsbury duly levelled from another set-piece in the 78th minute, Waterfall totally miscuing his drive from the edge of the box but the ball falling kindly for newly-arrived Okenabirhie to slide home from six yards.

Attendance: Today’s gate is 13,549 (1,183 away)
