There's a mystery house in Canley and it's a bit spooky...

Very little is known about the building

When you think of spooky, cemeteries and graveyards often come to mind.

But in Coventry, there is something even spookier, just yards away from Canley Garden Cemetery.

Located on Ivy Farm Lane, a small and quiet street off Cannon Hill Road is Canley Hall - an imposing, and strange sight.

A fairly large looking building on a sizeable plot of land, it appears to be two storeys tall, with an attic building.

The gated alleyway beside the property adds to the spooky feel of the place.

What's more, it is a Grade II listed building.

But one thing sets it apart from any old grand building - it is completely boarded up, and its history is something of a mystery .

Despite the fact that it is located a very short distance away from one of Coventry's busiest roads - the A45, few know of its existence, and even fewer know anything about it.

In 2016, the Coventry Telegraph took a look at three buildings believed to be at risk in Coventry - according to the Save Britain's Heritage campaign group.

There, it was described as a late 17th or early 18th century house.

But even back then it was something of a mystery having been "empty and boarded up for around 40 years".

Today, there is very little different to this building - it has remained unchanged for a number of years.

It has even attracted the attention of urban explorers, but it doesn't appear as though anyone has actually trespassed onto the land.

Despite this, it doesn't appear to have been completely untouched.

It has clearly seen some love and attention in recent times.

Work was carried out a few years ago to repair the roof.

Even more recently, the gardens of the building, a lawn and hedges, are quite well kept.

It is not clear who is maintaining this.

So for now, the mystery house on Ivy Farm Lane remains a mystery.

Earliest known map of Canley Hall Farm dated 1889 showing the farm completley surrounded by roads. Ivy Farm is above and to the left of Ivy Farm Lane. Canley Hall itself is marked in red. It was converted to twelve individual flats or bedsits at some time in the 1950s or 1960s, I suspect for use by the council as an old people's home. It was abandoned around the time that residential care was privatised.
