Mark Robins sees his side pick up three points against Wycombe Wanderers

Conor Chaplin headed home his first goal from open play to secure brilliant back-to-back league wins to lift the club up to 12th place in the table.

The late August signing popped up eight minutes from time with a beautifully placed header from a Dujon Sterling cross to sink Wycombe Wanderers and ensure the Sky Blues followed up their impressive victory at Charlton Athletic last week.

The busy striker had earlier been denied by goalkeeper Ryan Allsop, who also pulled off a good save to prevent Jordy Hiwula opening the scoring at the Ricoh Arena.

And the former Coventry loan keeper almost popped up with an equaliser at the death when he went up for a last ditch corner as the home side desperately clung to their slender lead in four long minutes of stoppage time.

Mark Robins made just one change to last week’s starting line-up at The Valley, drafting in one of his super subs, Hiwula, on a day when central midfielder Liam Kelly dropped to the bench.

Amadou Bakayoko, meanwhile – City’s two-goal match winner from the previous week – had to be content with another place on the bench against Wanderers who started the day three places and three points behind Coventry in 17th place.

Hiwula justified his selection with a lively game on the left and went closest to breaking the early deadlock when he cut into the box and let fly with a shot that was palmed over by keeper Ryan Allsop.

Jonson Clarke-Harris was a presence in both boxes and got on the end of one Hiwula centre but couldn’t get any power to work the keeper who was in inspired form as he dropped to his left to deny Chaplin just after the half-hour mark after Clarke-Harris had knocked the ball down to him.

At the other end Lee Burge was called upon to make one decent save in the opening 45, denying a Jason McCarthy header at his near post six minutes from the break.

Wanderers enjoyed more possession in the second half when City were forced to play more on the counter attack. And they were a real threat with the pace of Hiwula and Luke Thomas but struggled to find that killer touch in front of goal.

But with eight minutes left on the clock, City managed to snatch another late victory when Sterling sent in a pinpoint centre to the unmarked Chaplin who jumped and directed a superb header to finally beat Allsop.

The keeper almost had the last word when he got on the end of a late flag kick, but skied his first time shot high over the bar from seven yards out.

Attendance: Today’s attendance is 10,480, including 792 away fans.
