Bomb squad in Coventry after police called to reports of suspicious package

Police were called at around 2.45pm this afternoon

The bomb squad has been called and a Coventry street closed off after reports of a suspicious package.

A call was made to West Midlands Police this afternoon and officers immediately made their way to Station Street West in Foleshill.

The road has been closed off between the entrances at Foleshill Road and Northey Road since around 2.45pm.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said that officers from the Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposal unit have also been sent to the scene.

They added: "Police were called to Station Street West in Coventry at around 2.45pm today to reports of a suspicious package.

"A cordon has been put in place and Station Street West is shut at Northey Road and Foleshill Road.

"Drivers are urged to find alternative routes."

Bomb squad deal with mysterious package in Foleshill



A five-hour drama which saw army bomb disposal officers on the streets of Foleshill ended without incident on Monday night.

Station Street West was closed off next to Toros Steakhouse (formerly the General Wolfe pub), for around five hours from 2.45pm on Monday October 1.

Police were initially called to reports of a suspicious package and officers were immediately sent to the scene.

The bomb squad was subsequently sent in.

The drama saw the road closed off between the entrances at Foleshill Road and Northey Road.

The bomb squad were spotted at the scene and some people in the area reported hearing an explosion earlier in afternoon.

The road was eventually reopened at around 7.30pm.

Today a West Midlands Police spokesman confirmed that the package did not turn out to be suspicious.

They said: “The item in Station Street West was safely disposed of by the bomb squad and was deemed not suspicious.”

However authorities did not reveal what the package was or what was inside it.
