Sky Blues blown away by shocking start

Coventry City were blow away by three goals in the space of the first 22 minutes by previously struggling Bristol Rovers.

Striker Gavin Reilly sparked the Gas explosion with a route-one sixth minute finish before a Tom Lockyer header from a set piece and top corner stunner from Ollie Clarke put the result beyond doubt.

Dom Hyam pulled a goal back just before the break to give the wet and cold 1,137 travelling fans hope for a second half fight-back

But that failed to materialise as the home side managed their advantage after the break against a Coventry side that looked a shadow of the team that had recorded back-to-back league wins going into the game.

Having beaten third from top last week, the Sky Blues followed up what should have been a confidence boosting three points with defeat to third from bottom Rovers.

The Gas looked far from a flagging side that had failed to win a single game at the Memorial Stadium this term going into the weekend.

The turning point of the game was in the fifth minute when Conor Chaplin picked out Luke Thomas at the far post.

City should have taken the lead but the Derby County loan man passed up the gilt-edged chance, somehow managing to screw his shot across the face of goal.

That miss that proved extremely costly as Coventry were hit with an immediate sucker punch when a big kick from the keeper was flicked on to Gavin Reilly, who shrugged off Jordan Willis and hit a clinical finish past Lee Burge.

The visitors were then 2-0 down inside 20 minutes when centre-back Lockyer was allowed to drift in behind to head home a free-kick lifted into the box, and Ollie Clarke wrapped things up with a top corner stunner three minutes later.

Coventry huffed and puffed but were struggling to hit back until a Michael Doyle free-kick found the head of Hyam at the far post, the defender timing his run to finish unmarked in a carbon copy of Rovers’ second goal.

Chaplin was denied by the keeper from close range midway through the second half but City were kept largely at arm’s length by the home side, keeping Coventry’s chances to a minimum with plenty of well-orgainsed defending.
